Pain from illness is the most intolerant among four sufferings in life. Tzu Chi with more than ten years experience of saving the poor, finds that illness is the root of pain and origin of poverty. Many families become poor because of sickness. However, any forms of help are only temporary relief. Preventing poverty and stop falling ill are fundamental methods. Thus, Tzu Chi Free Clinic for the Poor was founded in September, 1972, supported by several doctors and nurses from Hualien Hospital. The clinic provided free clinic twice a week and irregularly held county itinerancy of free clinic. When Hualien Tzu Chi General Hospital opened in 1986, the hospital took over the mission of Tzu Chi Free Clinic and dedicate to the free clinic for remote areas and aboriginals.

In 1996, Tzuchi International Medical Association (TIMA) was founded. 40 service points over the world inherited and radiated Tzu Chi spirits. They serve free clinic, home medical visit and home care not only in the usual time but also during international emergency. They give assistance across the countries.

The spirit of free clinic focuses on life-respect, compensating for insufficient medical resource. Setting global medical network makes medical resource available from every corner of the world. Because of it, every treasure life will get immediate care once people suffer from illness.
