Words from the Superintendent
Many years ago, traffic convenience is unavailable in eastern Taiwan. Insufficient medical resource cannot attract talent doctors. Most of residents are poor and helpless. They have to travel over mountains to see a doctor for a cold. Serious illness is usually delayed and causes death.
Dr. Poon Wing-Him
Master Cheng Yen compassionated these sufferers, resolving all obstacles and finally founded Hualien Tzu Chi of  medical treatment. To arrive in Hualien Tzu Chi General Hospital in 1986. Thus, residents in the east of Hualien could have the service quality of medical centers. However, the narrow-shaped valley and vast territory in Hualien and Taitung usually delay the timing

Guanshan Township is located in the middle of Yuli and Taitung downtown. Yuli is 80km away from Taitung. Originally, there is no hospital between them. Tzu Chi medicine mission always heads to the remote area. On 3rd May, 2003, Guanshan Tzu Chi General Hospital was inaugurated. The hospital persists in the spirit of humanity-medicine, safeguarding residents’ health and life. Neglecting cost, the hospital provides 24-hour clinic service and makes patients with serious trauma, stroke, acute cardiopathy and breathing trouble get timely medical treatment. We also hold itinerant medicine, routinely serving people in deep mountains, counties and tribes of Southern Cross-Island Highway, reducing the embarrassment of these places of being called non-medicine villages. Moreover, we cooperate with communities, promoting community healthcare and charity bazaars. We help the poor and clean the streets. The seeds of Tzu Chi humanity are spread. Beyond medical treatment, love and care are transmitted. We practice the charity work in compassion and release.

Master Cheng Yen often says, “Making good wishes” and “Intentions beget blessings, vows beget strengths.” Only practice can fulfill wishes; wishes and actions working together is the spirit of Tzu Chi spirits. May we can recruit more people with the same goal by cultivating in Guanshan. Let’s create blessings for the locals and advocate great love.
