Because Master Cheng Yen compassionate insufficient medical resource in eastern Taiwan—life is constantly threatened, she took the initiative to build a hospital. However, it is difficult to collect funding and recruit medical staff. Although the way to the goal was bumping, supported by the love of thousands of people, Buddha Tzu Chi General Hospital was inaugurated on 17 August, 1986. The hospital holds the faith in the best medical quality and service. Growing stably, Tzu Chi General Hospital was upgraded as a medical center, the only one in the east of Taiwan.
The Unity Building accepting acute patients was inaugurated in May, 2005. It symbolizes that Tzu Chi medical profession keep moving forward. Concentric Circle Dormitory Park was completed at the same time which makes doctors’ families settle down. Thus, they could focus on their professions and improve themselves. As talent doctors keep jointing the professional teams, hi-tech medical instruments following patients’ need, are implemented. These facilities make people in remote areas of the east of Taiwan have same level of medical resource with the medical center in the west of Taiwan or even higher class medical service than that. Through the integration of crossed-specialty medical teams, patients obtain more complete and acute diagnosis and treatment than before.
Besides focusing on the service of clinic medical care, academic research is also one of development chapters. Department of education and research led by top experts and the central laboratory in the best research environment make doctors do research on the basis of clinic experience and thus break the limitation of medicine science. In the future, the Research Building which is constructing will broaden the field of medical research.
Education is one of Tzu Chi four missions. Tzu Chi medical center keeps upgrading education of new coming doctors. Besides team instruction, question-oriented and evidence-based medicine, since August, 2005, Clinical Anatomy and Operation Simulation have made attending physicians and resident doctors practice or teach various difficult operations on the cadaver preserved by quick frozen skills. The cadaver donors are volunteer to donate their bodies. Their love and wisdom have doctor obtain priceless treasure experience.
Current medical environment lacks the care and communication between doctors and patients. Although creative research and education can improve medical quality and hi-tech medical teams can cure many diseases, patients’ suffering in the spirit needs warm humanity-care and consolation. You can see volunteers everywhere in the hospital. They compensate the chasm between doctors and patients. In the Tzu Chi medical system, medicine is life-respect and not cold anymore, the care of holistic body, mind and spirit. The ambiance of Tzu Chi humanity creates not famous doctors but conscientious doctors.
The great love is boundless and so is medical care. Because Tzu Chi volunteers live over the world and Tzu Chi Foundation is one of NGO (non-governmental organizations) members, Tzu Chi medical teams frequently support large-scale emergency rescue and free clinic. Because of the influence of Da-Ai Television, many international patients with unique diseases came to Hualien for medical treatment and assistance.
In the early time, patients travel over mountains to seek medical treatment in the west city. Now, people in Hualien have the medical center integrating internal and external image medical science with examination and other relative specialties. It has medical teams integrated with hi-tech medicine and accepts numbers of international patients. The hospital not only witnesses the whole development of Tzu Chi medicine but proves the vision of global medical care is coming true.
